In addition to visa-free travel, Americans can apply for an e-visa for 40 countries. An e-visa is an electronic document which allows entry. It is obtained through an online application process. For 18 countries, Americans can acquire a visa upon arrival. This is obtained after landing in the country.

However, a traditional visa is required for 23 countries. This means American citizens must apply for a visa before traveling to these destinations. The United States has a population of over 331 million, making it the third most populous country in the world.
